Review Summary

  • Good Absorption:
Does a great job of absorbing pee. Changes color a little to show it’s used and doesn’t get musty.
  • Odor Control: I found this cat litter kept odors down when cleaning daily.
  • Kitten Friendly: It has a rocky texture, but out kittens enjoyed using it and lined up to give it a try.
  • Neutral Scent: Unscented out of the bag, which is good if you don’t want a perfumy smell.
  • Value for money: Affordable price with large bag sizings for bulk buy.
  • Dust: A little dusty out the bag, with PM2.5 levels dipping into harmful levels at close range.
  • Non-Clumping: While it absorbs well, this litter doesn’t clump.
  • Tracking: Litter granules tended to stick to our kittens paws and spread a little.

Final Thoughts

Chandler Original cat litter is a good value-for-money choice. Whilst it doesn’t clump and tracks a little, our kittens loved using it. It absorption is pretty solid and odor control was also better than average.

The litter gets dusty out the bag which isn’t optimal for health. I’m not a big fan of that and it spreads around on surfaces a bit.

If you are after an affordable quality litter that absorbs well then give Chandler a try.

Dustiness

Chandler original cat litter produces a small amount of dust. I noticed a little cloud when pouring.

The levels of PM2.5 dust increased when pouring Chandler at close range. However, the levels only rose to harmful levels briefly at 0cm (i.e. directly next to it).

If you’ve got asthma or related issues, I’d keep my distance and use a well ventilated area. The litter tracks quite a bit, which a larger tray will help control.

Cat Preference and Usage

I tested Chandler cat litter alongside Tofu cat litter Australia.

Our kittens preferred using Chandler. They seem to prefer using clay litter in general compared to most tofu litter, so this wasn’t surprising.

I think your mileage will depends on your cats experience with clay litter. If your cats enjoy clay then they’ll probably enjoy this one.

Review Limitations

I only used this litter for 3 days (one to acclimate the kittens to the litter, and two for testing). This may not be enough time to find out if our kittens liked it best.

I emptied the litter tray four times to try make sure the trays were clean at all times to reduce bias. However, I couldn’t empty the tray at night so that might have influenced results.

Finally the litter boxes used in this article are only 42cm long. Research suggests cats prefer larger boxes (at least 1.5x the size of your cat).
