Ziwi Peak Cat Food Review: A Short Summary
I can’t find much fault with Ziwi Peak cat food. The wet and dry food choices meet a cats nutrition needs as obligate carnivores.
The main gripe I had with Ziwi Peak is the use of chickpeas in some of their wet food range. This raises the carbohydrate a little to something less desirable for cats.
Aside from that, our some of our cats didn’t enjoy Ziwi Peak (whilst others loved it). The smell of some of the products are strong out the tin.
In this article, I’ll break down the products in Ziwi Peak’s range. I will compare the following:
- Ingredient quality
- Taste results from testing
Finally, I’ll go over some frequently asked questions about Ziwi Peak cat food.

Let’s break down the ingredient, nutrition quality, and taste of each product type.
Ziwi Peak Cat Food Ingredients
Based on our scoring system, Ziwi Peak is an awesome cat food. The ingredients in this food match what cats need as obligate carnivores.
Our best rated product in the Ziwi Peak range is Otago Valley. This food contains a wide-variety of 5 meats and seafood products in the tin. There are no fillers, gums, carrageenan, and/or carbohydrate based foods.
All Ziwi Peak products use the recipe descriptor which means 25-94.9% of the named ingredients. However, they also show the percent of animal based foods, which is higher than 90% in all products.
The main point of contention with Ziwi Peak is the use of chickpeas in their wet free-range products. This might raise the carbohydrate content a little, although it doesn’t appear in high amounts.
We score cat food out of 100.
A higher score is a sign of a better quality food. I take into account relative weighing of ingredients based on the labelling words (e.g. recipe, dinner) as these words equate to different quantities of food.
Read more about what that means over in my cat food labelling guide.

Ziwi Peak Nutrition
The nutrition in Ziwi Peak is very good. Their products line up well with what a cat needs as an obligate carnivore for the most part.
All Ziwi Peak cat food products are AAFCO approved for life stages. This means the foods are suitable for kittens, adults, and senior cats.
When given the choice, cat’s choose a food with around 52% protein, 12% carbohydrate, and 36% fat. Our analysis shows Ziwi Peak cat foods fall around this ratio, which is great for your cats health.
Cats are carbohydrate intolerant and cannot digest excess carbs. It’s important to look for a product that contains as close to or less than 12% carbohydrate on a dry matter basis.
Three products in Ziwi Peak’s free-range canned foods are over 12% carbohydrate:
- Ziwi Peak free-range beef recipe (14.3% carbohydrate on a dry matter basis)
- Ziwi Peak free-range rabbit & lamb recipe (14.6% carbohydrate on a dry matter basis)
- Ziwi Peak free-range lamb recipe (15.7% carbohydrate on a dry matter basis)
This is probably due to the chickpea content I talked about earlier. Whilst this amount of carbohydrate isn’t that much higher than 12%, it’s still of some concern. This may irritate digestion in some cats or raise blood sugar.
All other products are low in carbohydrate.
The fat content of all products is high. This is great for cats that are struggling with weight loss, particularly senior cats.
Protein is also high in all products. Given the protein is from mostly animal-based food sources, these products should help cats of all ages maintain a healthy body.
Finally, Ziwi Peak also includes information on micronutrients on their website. They show all products have a high calcium to phosphate ratio. This is important for bone and kidney health.
Here is the nutrition information for the selected products from the Ziwi Peak range:
|Ziwi Peak product range||Selected product||Life stage||Calories/kg||Kcal/g dry matter basis||Protein||Fat||Carbohydrate||Fiber||Ash||Moisture||Taurine||Calcium: Phosphate Ratio|

Product details: No strong smell. Square shaped kibble pieces. All cats enjoyed it except for one.
3/5 cats ate Ziwi Peak 5 meats & fish East Cape.
Product details: Food was like a loaf, it had a very fishy smell and none of the cats were excited by it. Jojo and Storm refused to eat it, the other 3 enjoyed it but were hesitant. The smell was very overpowering especially after heating it.
Here are the results below:
Cat Reviewer: Mimi
Mimi enjoyed Ziwi Peak air-dried lamb but did not want to try the East Cape (as with Jojo).
Cat Reviewer: Jojo
Jojo enjoyed Ziwi Peak air-dried lamb but did not want to try the East Cape (see video above).
Cat Reviewer: Midnight
Midnight enjoyed both Ziwi Peak products.
Cat Reviewer: Storm
Storm enjoyed Ziwi Peak air-dried lamb and but rejected Ziwi Peak East Cape.
Cat Reviewer: Misty
Liked both products.
It is possible that some of the mixed outcomes with these foods come down to neophobia. Cat’s tend to reject foods they haven’t tried before, needing several exposures to ‘warm up’ to the new food.
Ziwi Peak uses a lot of local ingredients from New Zealand. These may be a little unusual to cats at first.
Despite all this, it would surely frustrate owners to have to throw out expensive food!
