Review Summary

  • Cats Love It: My two kittens took a liking to this litter, preferring it over clay.
  • Soft Texture: The litter has a soft spongy texture that is easy on the paws. Might be why our kittens enjoyed it.
  • Good Absorption: While it doesn’t clump, this litter does absorb pee well.
  • Cost-Effective: Scrunch and Sticks is budget friendly compared to other options. The smallest 6L bag is around $7 per fill and will comfortably fill a standard litter tray.
  • Dodgy Bag: I struggled a bit while trying to open the bag. Whilst it’s paper, the design is a little awkward.
  • Dust Concerns: Pouring the litter produces a small dust cloud, and upon monitoring the air quality, I noticed a spike in PM2.5 levels. This increased dust beyond safe limits, which is a health concern.
  • Scooping Issues: The litter has a thick pellet design that makes it hard to scoop out feces.
  • Odor Control: While it manages urine odor ok, it doesn’t really do a great job with feces odor.
  • Wasteful: Because scooping is difficult some pellets get stuck on the scoop.
Score

Final Thoughts

Scrunch and Sticks cat litter is a recycled paper litter that’s affordable, soft, and cat-friendly. If that’s what you’re after, then this litter is great.

However, it’s dust levels do spike a bit when analysed at close range. It’s odor control could be better and scooping isn’t fun.

Dustiness

In general, Scrunch and Sticks is low dust.

There was an elevation detected right next to the air quality monitor when patting the litter with my hand. This pushed the PM2.5 dust levels (fine dust) into harmful ranges.

Whilst it’s generally low dust, this elevation is of concern to those with asthma and your cats.

Cat Preference and Usage

Our two kittens enjoyed using Scrunch and Sticks recycled paper cat litter.

They used the litter as more than their usual clay litter. I think the soft spongy texture is what they liked, which is easy on the paws.

Scooping was frustrating due to the large size of the pellets. The pellets also don’t cover feces waste well and it gets a little smelly.

Urine waste doesn’t clump and the litter itself looked a little wet after two days. That leads me to think I’d have to change this one after a couple of weeks.

Review Limitations

I only used this litter for 3 days (one to acclimate the kittens to the litter, and two for testing). This may not be enough time to find out if our kittens liked it best.

I emptied the litter tray three times a day to make sure the trays were clean at all times to reduce bias. However, I couldn’t empty the tray at night so that might have influenced results.

Finally the litter boxes used in this article are only 42cm long. Research suggests cats prefer larger boxes (at least 1.5x the size of your cat).
