Meat Mates Cat Food Range

Meat Mates offers wet canned food and freeze-dried cat food treats.

In this review I’ll be going over the wet caned cat food options. There are three options that are available to buy:

Meat Mates Cat Food Ingredients

Here is the ingredient list for Meat Mates canned cat food beef dinner (meat ingredients highlighted):

Beef, Water Sufficient For Processing, Beef Tripe, Beef Heart, Beef Kidney, Beef Spleen, Beef Liver, Fish Oil, Flaxseed Flakes, Dried Kelp, Dipotassium Phosphate, Salt, Magnesium Oxide, Vitamin E Supplement, Zinc Proteinate, Taurine, Copper Proteinate, Manganese Proteinate, Thiamine Mononitrate, Vitamine D3 Supplement, Folic Acid

Meat ingredients: 7

Legume ingredients: 0

Grain ingredients: 0

Potato ingredients: 0

Vegetable ingredients: 1

Other ingredients: 1 (flaxseed flakes)

The ingredients panel for Meat Mates is excellent. It’s high in meat based ingredients from meat based sources. That’s good news given your cat is a obligate carnivore, and thrives off animal based foods.

The meat sources in the beef flavor are all from beef, which is great if you’re after a ‘beef only’ product. Similarly, the chicken and lamb food options stick to that meat source. The lamb dinner food is suitable for allergies, as lamb is a novel protein source.

The only other animal based food is fish oil, which is a good source of omega 3 fatty acids.

There’s no fillers in the tin. No carrageenan, no gums, no grains, and no legumes. That’s good for easier digestion.

Finally there are a couple of added ingredients like kelp and flaxseed flakes. I’m not sure of the benefit of these. Flaxseed is high in insoluble fiber helps bulk up stools for better digestive health.

It’s pretty hard to find fault with the ingredients here.

Does it contain a lot of artificial ingredients?

Meat Mates does not contain any artificial colors and flavors.

Let’s go through all the nutrition information for the Meat Mates canned cat food products. All products are AAFCO approved for cats of all life stages. This means you can serve Meat Mates to a kitten, adult, and/or senior.

The protein (on a dry matter basis) is over 40.0% for all three products. The chicken dinner option contains 52.5% protein on a dry matter basis.

According to AAFCO’s nutrition guidelines, cats of all life stages need food with at least 30% protein on a dry matter basis. Senior cats need additional protein due to poorer digestion. Meat Mates covers the protein needs to help senior cats maintain muscle strength.

All products contain between 30.0-41.7% fat on a dry matter basis. Cat’s prefer a higher fat diet (~25-40% on a dry matter basis). These foods are around the sweet spot for food acceptance. The higher fat content is also beneficial for cats with weight loss, due to the high calorie density of fat.

We recommend cat food with less than 12% carbohydrate on a dry matter basis. All three products are very low in carbohydrate at 1.0% or less. This may be helpful for blood sugar control in diabetic cats.

The information for taurine, calcium, and phosphate is only available for the chicken dinner product. The taurine is in line with AAFCO recommendations. Note, that AAFCO suggest that gums may interfere with taurine absorption. There are no gums in Meat Mates cat food products (meaning better taurine absorption).

The calcium to phosphate ratio is 1.4, which may benefit cats with kidney disease.
